2024
MODERNIZING HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Creates opportunities for local school districts to offer courses which reflect the needs of their students and the interests of their community.
New standards would keep a requirement for a minimum of 24 credits to graduate, remove the Algebra II requirement for graduation (while still requiring that Algebra II be offered), increase flexibility for electives which could be used for CTE or foreign language arts, and create more opportunities for offering financial literacy, without mandating it as required class.
INCREASED TRANSPARENCY & TRAINING FOR LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS
Implements several accountability measures for New Mexico’s school boards and charter school councils. Among the provisions of the legislation are a 10-hour series of mandatory trainings for board/council members and the requirement for all board/council meetings to be webcast and archived for 3 years.
Requires greater financial transparency for elected board candidates by changing the law to require campaign finance reporting for all candidates spending more than $1,000. New guidelines would also prohibit newly elected board of education members from firing a current superintendent within the first 60 days after being sworn in.
COMPREHENSIVE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDY
The Legislative Education Study Committee would study the structure, curriculum, funding, and design of middle schools and make recommendations to the Legislature and the governor on methods and means of enhancing the quality of middle school education that equitably serves all students in New Mexico.
STUDY THE REDUCTION OF CLASS SIZES
The Legislative Education Study Committee will study kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) class size reductions, including the potential effects on student outcomes, staffing, and funding. Findings from the study would be published and presented to the governor and the Legislature by December 31, 2024.
