Albuquerque – AFT New Mexico President Whitney Holland released the following statement:
“Yesterday, in elections across New Mexico, voters chose candidates who reflected their values and offered a vision for better communities, stronger schools, and increased support for students and educators.
“In communities like Las Cruces and Los Alamos, where union educators and allied community groups worked together, we saw strong victories for candidates who pledged to center students and families in their goals for their respective districts, enabling continued progress on strong existing foundations.
“In Gallup, voters removed incumbent candidates who were out of touch with their constituents, lacked transparency, and minimized educator voices. Voters in Albuquerque rejected candidates backed by a handful of out-of-touch politicians and out-of-state dark money from billionaires who seek to monetize education at the expense of our public schools, returning power back to voters and the larger community.
“These results are cause for optimism for public education in New Mexico and we want to offer sincere congratulations to all who won their respective races and to thank those candidates who ran but were not victorious. It takes deep commitment and courage to serve your community in these often-thankless positions.
“Our union would also like to thank those elected officials and community groups who stood with New Mexico’s public educators throughout this election by supporting, endorsing, and working for each of these candidates. We will always be grateful for your solidarity.”
