Socorro – American Federation of Teachers New Mexico President Whitney Holland and Socorro School Employees Association President Peggy Mitchusson released the following statements:

“The accretion of multiple new job titles at Socorro Consolidated Schools is welcome news for these 55 hardworking classified District staff. After several months of internal organizing and submitting union authorization cards to the New Mexico Public Employee Labor Relations Board, these workers now have won their right to join our union.

“We believe every worker deserves a union, especially those serving in classified roles throughout our school settings. The addition of bus drivers, janitors, custodians, administrative assistants, security professionals, technology workers, among other roles helps us work to ensure every District employee is supported and seen within our union. Welcome to the AFT New Mexico family!” said Holland.

"We are so proud of every staff member who took a stand to help grow the Socorro School Employees Association to cover more job titles and better represent the needs and interests of our District community. We welcome your expertise, knowledge, and professionalism to our union. Every worker in our District plays an important role in the education and support of our students and it is our belief we can best serve our students knowing we have the protection of our union standing beside you. We will always do our best to support every Socorro employee each day as you do your jobs,” said Mitchusson.

The New Mexico Public Employee Labor Relations Board issued certification for this unit on August 27, 2025
with over 64% support. The 55 classified District employees throughout the
Socorro Consolidated School District join the Socorro School Employees Association, Local #3878,
organized with the American Federation of Teachers New Mexico.
