Albuquerque – American Federation of Teachers New Mexico President Whitney Holland released the following statement:
“Across New Mexico, educators and their families went to the polls to cast ballots for pro-education, pro-worker candidates, who were endorsed by AFT New Mexico. Over 90% of legislative candidates endorsed by our union won their respective races, including many first-time candidates.
“New Mexico voters rightfully echoed these values through their votes, electing educators, women of color, and progressive voices across the State, while rejecting incumbent legislators and candidates who sought to privatize our schools, deny access to family medical leave, and curtail labor rights.
“At the onset of this primary election cycle, our union took intentional steps to shake up our endorsement process and no longer rubber-stamp legislators who do not use their office and their votes to support public schools, public higher education institutions, our profession, and working New Mexicans. We believe last night’s outcomes are reflective of this shift and the redirection of our union’s resources and support.
“Our members are committed to working diligently over the next five months to ensure continued progress for New Mexico’s students and their families, public education at all levels, respect for our profession, and strengthening labor rights by working to elect the best possible candidates to the Roundhouse.”
